Baby Safety Items

As soon as your baby starts to become mobile then safety around your home will be extremely important. There are many baby safety items that will help and you should consider some or all of the following baby safety gear. (For more information and where to buy and order on baby safety items see our links.)

Baby Safety Gates and Barriers

Safety barriers are mainly used to stop your toddler falling down stairs and are designed to protect your child up to about 2 years of age. There are two types of gate and barrier:

•    A walk-through baby safety gate - These either have an integral frame that extends to grip the gap securely and a swing door, or are gates with hinges, which attach to the wall. A two-way opening gate is obviously going to be easier and more convenient. Choose a self locking baby safety gate and check that it will fit your stairway. Extension kits are available for most gates. Always ensure your gate is attached according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

baby gates for very wide openings•    Barriers - These simply block a gap and are easily detachable but they have no gate for access. Adults may be tempted to climb over them rather than release and then re-fix them, which makes them potentially hazardous - especially when used at the top of the stairs.

What other baby safety items are available?

Cupboard door and drawer locks

You should always lock all cupboards and drawers that baby can reach if they contain hazardous substances such as cleaning fluids and medicines as well as drawers containing cooking utensils and knives. Specially designed locks don’t have to be expensive. Designs vary. Some are screw fixed, which take a while to fit, but are more robust and long lasting;
some are attached by sticky pads, which are quick and easy, but may come unstuck in future; others are detachable. Different styles of door or cupboard require different styles of lock. Choose a style that fits and is easy for you to use.

Fires & Radiators

No matter how many times you tell your baby to stay away from these - the simple fact is that they won’t be happy until they’ve stuck their fingers in it. And don’t forget they’re bound tothrow Teddy at it as well! So use fireguards around all real fires, (including gas and electric) and radiators in rooms where your baby will be.

Socket Safety Plugs

It’s a good idea to fit socket safety plugs for all the baby accessible sockets in your house and corner pads for all furniture that your baby may hit their head on.

In the Kitchen

It’s worth buying a kitchen hob guard - so that even if (when?!) your child manages to turn on the rings he will be prevented from getting burnt. These won’t stop your child opening the grill or oven doors though. So get into the habit of turning the oven off at the mains to be on the safe side. Remember - always turn the pan handles towards the back
of the cooker…..

and remember to put a lock on your fridge door too.

Finally, remember that your baby will climb up anything and can be very crafty when it comes to reaching up for things they shouldn’t. It’s probably best not to keep the coffee table under a shelf with your best china on!
