Child safety screens for your wood stove and fireplace. Child guard screens offer hearth protection for your child’s safety around the hot wood burning stove. The intense hot heat
from fireplaces and wood burning stoves are no place for a child to play.

Accidents happen and a child safety screen is designed to detour children from serious burns. Most child guard screens are light weight allowing them to be easily removed when tending a fire.

Wood stove screens will offer protection from a child falling into the fireplace yet they are light enough that they will not harm a child if the screen should fall on them. It will scare the child more than it will hurt them. Wood stove child guard safety screen. This is the typical lightweight mesh screen designed for your child’s safety.

Most of the time your child will feel the hot heat and turn away but
accidents do happen and you can never be too safe. The mesh screen is projected out a few inches from the hot stove therefore it will be much cooler than the stove.

The wood stove screen features a center brace across the top to stabilize the screen. The screen is light enough to be removed when tending your wood burning stove yet rigid enough to prevent your child from falling into the hot stove. The child safety screen will also detour flying balls and toys.

Keep your child safe. KidCo makes a child safety screen for wood stoves. This screen protects your child with vertical bars and no mesh. This screen comes with mounting hardware so it can be attached to the wall at either end. The KidCo wood stove screen comes with 5 - 24" panels that can be configured to wrap around any stove. Additional panels in 8" and 24" sizes can be ordered separately if needed. The center panel features a gate that can be opened
when tending the wood stove. This child guard screen offers the most protection for your child.

BABY GATES. The words alone give you a sense that if you provide a gate, your little toddler will be safe and contained. I certainly agree. On the surface, this is what a baby gate will and should provide. But not all baby gates are created equal.

Let’s start with a few word choices that will get you the right equipment. A parent goes into a store and says to the clerk, ‘I’m here to buy a baby gate’. Remember, the baby is not going to use the gate, you are. Who knows what they’ll get.

Now try this, ‘I’m here to buy a gate for myself and my family to use to protect our baby’. You want a gate for an adult. You’re the one who has to use it every day. Now you have a shot at getting a gate that allows you, the parent, to use the equipment without stepping over it and cursing it every time you need to pass through it.

I have personally installed over a thousand gates in homes as a business. The one thing I always recommended was to choose the right gate for the job.

Place hard mounted gates at the top of the stairs. I actually prefer this hard mount gate in all areas as long as it is manageable; meaning the opening wasn’t so wide it had the gate swing half way across the room.

If you must have the pressure type in your doorways, choose something that takes hand coordination to open. In other words, the foot activated type is not what I would use. Trust me on this. Pressure gate damage can be worse than a gate that has been screwed into the wall.

One company stands out above the rest and that is a company by the name of KidCo. They provide a wide variety of gates for all types of situations from stairs to fireplaces. You can find them in baby stores and online. I recommend doing your homework before you buy.

My all time favorite would be the Safeway steel gate. It is the greatest for features and benefits. It’s a hard mount gate that is easy to install. Please follow instructions to the letter. I have installed this gate in a wide range of applications and always had the parent overjoyed with its performance. They also have mounting kits to assist you in your installation if needed.

The other gate I like is the hearth gate for fireplaces. It beats having to create a barrier out of furniture. I’ve seen parents get very creative when it comes to protecting the baby from danger. Doing it right is much easier.

Now I know I didn’t give you dimensions and every detail associated with the KidCo brand of gating, but you can get all that from them. Do it right and take my advice. Put safety products in that a pro would use. It’s the only gating I used for my own grandchildren.

As you may know, children are born with the desire to discover and explore something new and old, but with lack of understanding of how everything in the planet works, these little explorers have their own creepy way of putting themselves in harm’s way without them realizing it. It is for this reason actually that retractable child safety gates are designed and distributed throughout the market nowadays.

The retractable child safety gates are in the first place designed to help parents and guardians prevent their child from falling off the stairs and get injuries or worse, die from such kind of accident. A number of small children have already died on such accident. This is the reason that many households consider the retractable child safety gates as one of the major necessities from the moment their child starts crawling.

The retractable child safety gates are known for its unique appearance and quality. It is often described in several reviews that the retractable child safety gates look like a roller
They are typically installed by screwing them to the wall. The price of this child safety gate type is around twice the price of the so-called ‘pressure fitting gate’ type.

Just like the rest of the child safety gate types, the retractable ones come in all shapes and sizes. They differ according to how they are manufactured. With these differences, it’s hard to select the best or the right retractable gate.

That’s not a big problem though, since retractable child safety gates are designed and crafted differently, there are ways to identify the right products. One of those is to choose the gates that comply with the recognized standard, the EN 1930:2000, which says that child safety gates or barriers designed to fit across openings are good enough if the access to stairs is limited for children aged less than 24 months. Also, when installing the gate, read and understand the manufacturer’s instructions. Also make sure that the gate is properly and securely installed. Use the mounting kit and mount the gate to a flat wood surface preferably. For ultimate child safety, it is always important to make sure that the gate is properly closed or locked before leaving your child inside the room regardless of whether your baby is sleeping or awake.

After installing, check that the retractable child safety gate works properly and provides functional comfort and safety.

By nature, children are playful. Thus, it is downright harsh and unfair to tell them to sit tight during the times that you cannot watch them play. Of course, keeping them on a leash would make the social welfare people come knocking at your door.

It is a good thing that child safety gates have invaded the market. Parents wouldn’t have to resort to ruthless options just to keep their children at bay while they are busy doing their tasks.

Stairs are a big threat to the children’s safety. Even if you explain to them how much it hurts to have a fall, sometimes they want to find out for themselves what you mean exactly. This is why child safety gates are necessary. They should make the stairs off-limits to your children.

Children are all driven by their curious minds. So it should not surprise you to see them tinkering with the electric sockets, stove, fireplace, and other potentially dangerous things. It wouldn’t be such a problem if you are going to be able to watch their every move and be able to explain to them the dangers of the things that they may come in contact with.

However, if you are going to leave them even for just a short time, make sure that they do not have access to anything that might bring injury to them. Use child safety gates to fence them around their play area. Check that the gates would not give them the opportunity to play with electrical devices and sockets. The child safety gates should not be anywhere near the kitchen where anything on the stove could spill on your child.

There are several types of child safety gates available according to one’s needs. If you are putting up child safety gates on top of the stairs, choose one that screw to the walls. This will prevent the gates from falling down with the child in case he attempts to lean hard on it.

The children safety gates are also handy during parties involving plenty of kids. Parents are usually too busy to attend to their children and will not be able to check on them too often. Some kids may take this opportunity to wander off and do the things that moms would never like them to.

Choosing child safety gates would mean checking if they are certified and have the certification seal to prove it. This would tell you that they have met the quality and safety standards and are the safest ones to use to protect your child. Old child safety gates can be reused provided that they don’t have gaps that are large enough for a child’s head and neck to fit into. Otherwise, they would only defeat their purpose.

One of the main aspects of childproofing your house should be the installation of safety gates in critical areas such as stairs, fireplaces and doorways. Safety gates are designed to keep kids between 6 months and 24 months of age away from hazards. A properly selected and installed baby gate will make your life easier and your baby safer.

But how do you select the right gate for the right place? There is a wide variety of safety gates on the market, and whether you shop at a store or on-line, it can get confusing. Here are some simple tips that may help you with your selection:

1. Gate Location

In most cases location will demand what type of gates will have to be used.

There are two basic types of child safety gates: hardware-mounted and pressure-mounted.

Hardware-mounted gates will require drilling holes in the walls, door frames or stair balusters, but it is the most secure gate. In some areas, like the top of the stairs, a hardware mounted gate should be the only option for providing maximum security.

Pressure-mounted gates are installed by applying pressure against solid objects, such as a door frame or wall. Installation will not require drilling any holes or using screws to mount the gate.

2. Width of Opening

Measure the width of the location where you will be installing the baby gate. Most safety gates have an adjustable width so they can fit different size openings. Make sure the opening does not exceed the recommended maximum width of the gate. The gate should fit snugly and not wobble. Stay on the safe side. If a gate is recommended to use for openings 28" to 36", then do not use on openings more than 34" wide. Try to stay on lower side of the adjustment range.

Some safety gates have optional extensions that can be added to the base unit. Typically, extensions are available in widths of 8", 12", 24", etc. Try to use as few extensions as possible. For instance, use one 24" extension instead of two 12" extensions. Always remember: the more extensions you use, the more connections there will be, and the less stable the safety gate will become.

3. Few other things to keep in mind:

Gate height - The safety gate should stand a minimum of three-quarters of the baby’s height.

Gate slats - Vertical slats should be less then 2.5" apart. Stay away from the gates with horizontal slats.

Installation flexibility - Gates can be hardware-mounted or pressure-mounted. Make your selection based on location.

Opening and closing the gate - Check what type of latch is being used and how convenient it will be to open and close the gate.

Irregular-shaped areas - Consider using the HearthGate or ConfigureGate made by Kidco, as they will give you maximum flexibility and options.

Installation kits - Different kits are available for secure installation against drywall, stair posts, etc.

Hopefully these few tips will make your selection effortless and your home safer for your precious one.

Watching them play is a joy, but be careful. Avoid giving your baby toys that may have loose parts, or parts that are small enough to be swallowed.

Also look for toys that can resist chewing without losing any paint portions. This way you will avoid intoxication risks; keep your baby away from toys that have strings or that are not unbreakable.

Tip number two: Baby Gates Safety

Baby gates are used to prevent toddlers to go into an area of your home that may not be totally safe, such as the kitchen. Buy those gates that are one piece and attach themselves to the door frame. Do not use accordion gates, for they have been responsible of a lot of accidents (they are not manufactured anymore, but there may be a lot of them still available on shops). Pay attention to those gates placed on top of the stairs, make sure that is no possible way for your baby to climb (that includes getting rid of any large toy that may be used to climb).

Tip number three: Baby Walkers Safety.

There is only one thing to say about walkers: avoid them. It was medically proved that they do not improve your baby ability to walk, and can be very dangerous. A baby in a walker may acquire enough speed and momentum to break through a gate and fall from the top of the stairs, or he may walk directly into a very dangerous place, such as the street if you happen to leave the door opened.

This video on baby walker safety made me chuckle!

Besides any tip I may give you, there is an obligation you have as a parent: never leave a baby without adult supervision, even for a little time. Remember, accidents happen in less than one second, but they are remembered for a lifetime.

Any woman who has been pregnant can confirm that pregnancy is filled with worries. Granted, some of these worries are unfounded, but moms-to-be and dads-to-be often fret about anything that seems or feels out of the ordinary.

To ensure that the pregnancy goes as smoothly as possible, most women seek out the latest and best pregnancy information, adjust their lifestyles to optimize the health of their babies, and get regular prenatal care.

Among the most enjoyable activities during pregnancy are choosing baby products and registering for gifts for baby showers. If couples have already chosen baby names, it’s especially exciting to receive personalized gifts for their newborns. In the midst of planning for a new baby, though, new parents often overlook one crucial element of baby products: their safety. Knowing which car seats, cribs, strollers, furniture, and clothing meet stringent safety standards can go far in providing new moms and dads with peace of mind.

Baby Safety Recalls

Whether buying baby products for your own infant or choosing a gift for a baby shower, your first stop should be the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. (CPSC). The CPSC has the latest information on recent recalls of dangerous baby products - information that is crucial to have before you begin shopping. For example, the CPSC recently issued a recall on a stroller with double seats because children in the add-on seat could touch the rear tires, which poses an abrasion hazard. Similarly, a manufacturer voluntarily recalled children’s parka jackets, which had a hood drawstring that posed a strangulation hazard. And a major mass merchandiser pulled over 200,000 toys from their shelves that had either lead paint, sharp points, or choking hazards.

Baby Safety Car Seats

When it comes to infant car seats, your best bet is to buy a brand new car seat. Used car seats may seem more economical, but they may not be safe. If a car seat is more than ten years old or has been involved in a crash, it may not be structurally sound. Similarly, car seats have an "expiration date," so double check that the car seat you buy is up-to-date. Resist the temptation to buy a seat that your infant will "grow into," as he or she can slip out of car seats that are too large. As a reminder, infants should ride in a rear-facing seat until they’re at least one year old and at least 20 pounds.

Cribs and Baby Safety Beds

New cribs are always the best bet for meeting the latest safety standards. These standards include making sure that the distance between the slats is no more than 2-3/8 inches; that the mattress fits snugly into the crib; and that the top of the side rail, when at its lowest position, is at least 26 inches about the mattress.

Selecting baby products and receiving baby products as gifts is exciting, as it adds to the anticipation of the day when your new baby will arrive. And, by making sure that the baby products you choose are safe, you will have one less thing to worry about!

There are many parents that think that letting a baby sleep on an adult bed is perfectly fine. However, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission says otherwise

Always keep the side of the crib that drops pulled up and fastened to prevent your baby falling. This is, of course, especially crucial when the baby is alone and unattended.

Choosing The Best Child Bed Safety Rails For Your Child’s Protection

What could scare your child more than the Boogieman? A fall from his bed! You may be able to put him to sleep by reading him bedtime stories, singing lullabies, or rocking him gently, but can you stop worrying long enough to have a good night’s sleep as well? Child bed safety rails may not assure your little one that the Boogieman is a myth, but it can assure both of you that he won’t fall off his bed.

There are several child bed safety rails available in the market. Before buying a particular one, it is imperative that you go over the product description to make sure that the child bed safety rails you intend to buy fit the bed that you are going to attach it to. There are products that are supposed to be attached to the top of the mattress and not adjacent to it. The purpose for this is to avoid the incidence of your child being caught between the bed and the child bed safety rails.

The other type of baby bed safety rails would require you to attach them at the sides of the bed. Some products from this type are admittedly unsafe for use because it offers the chance for children to become entrapped between the mattress and the child bed safety rails. However, there are some products that provide a snug fit leaving no space between the bed and the rails.

There are also child bed safety rails that guard both sides of the bed. These are most useful to use if the child’s bed is in the center of the room or in the absence of a wall side. Most of these products are attached together from under the mattress, giving it a snug and an unmovable fit. This particular mechanism eliminates the chance of the child to roll between the bed and the child bed safety rails.

Even if the child bed safety rails are designed to prevent any accidents to happen during bedtime, it is ironic that a lot of reported deaths and injuries in children are related to the use of these products. These cases were either due to the entrapment of the children between the bed and the child bed safety rails or their slipping through the bars or mesh of the rails.

The study on these rails-related cases has caused parents to think twice about using these products for their children. However, the number of deaths and injuries from falls are more alarming. Child bed safety rails are the angels that they are created to be, but letting them function as such depends on how well you choose the products. They should be able to take care of your child on his most vulnerable hours.

Keeping your baby safe is one of the biggest concerns for all parents. There are many things we take for granted, but are hazards to your baby. Your home is not ready for the baby until you do some things to make it safe, especially if they are beginning to crawl or walk.

Don’t find out what is dangerous the hard way. Here are some tips to remember. This list is incomplete as each home is different, but hopefully, these tips will get you started in the right direction.

Your Purse; Babies love to play with the things found in a purse, whether yours or a guests. Some of these things can be very dangerous to your baby, like medications, nail files, pens, cosmetics and other small objects.

Cleaning your home; Of course, you should make sure all cleaning products are out of reach of the baby when they are stored, but also keep this in mind as you are using them. It’s very easy to get busy cleaning and turn your back, just long enough for them to get into something dangerous. Use the sink instead of a mop bucket. Your baby can drown in a small amount of water, not to mention what is in the water may be harmful to them.

Furniture; Make sure none of your furniture lamps, or decorations are easily tipped over. Keep their high chair away from walls and other surfaces they can use for leverage to push it, possibly tipping it over. No furniture that has chipping or peeling paint should be allowed in the house with your baby.

Check out the rooms of your house often and remember to check them from your baby’s point of view. Get down on the floor to look for possible hazards.

A lot of Moms, especially those who breastfeed, like to have their baby sleep in the bed with them. There are some safety tips to keep in mind when doing this as well.

1. Don’t put them into an adult bed alone to sleep. They can crawl to an edge and fall off. They can become trapped between the headboard and the bed or the wall. They can also suffocate in soft bedding.

2. Babies should be put to sleep on their back, not on their stomach. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome may have something to do with placing babies on their stomachs to sleep, according to the ‘Back To Sleep Campaign’.

3. Don’t use pillows, comforters, and thick quilts or blankets for babies under 1 year old. They stand a chance of suffocating themselves. Securely fitting crib sheets are the safe way to go.

4. Make sure your baby cannot fall out of bed. Bed railing is a useful item to have or having your bed with one side to the wall. The baby should sleep between the mother and the bed rail, not between two parents.

5. Make sure your bed has a firm surface. Never let your baby sleep on a featherbed, beanbag, waterbed, deep mattress, or other too-soft surface.

6. If you are under the influence of alcohol or medication that makes you groggy, do not put your baby to sleep in your bed. If you are groggy, you pose a danger to your baby.

7. Too many pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals can increase your baby’s risk of strangulation or suffocation.

8. Never fall asleep on a couch, sofa, or overstuffed chair with your baby. They can get wedged between the cushions and suffocate.

9. Don’t stuff too many bodies into a bed with a small baby. If you share sleep with more than one child, adequate space is necessary for both comfort and safety.
